The Sandwich Sidehillers Winter Trail Club will be hosting the White Mountain Milers Snowshoe Race on Saturday, January 26th at 11:00 a.m. The start/finish line is on Quimby Field behind the Center Sandwich Post Office. This race is a qualifying race for national snowshoe racing, but is open to any skill level. The course is 4 miles long and is run through Sandwich Fairgrounds, into the woods to some hilly, challenging terrain, then back to the finish line. The snowshoes used are much smaller than regular deep-snow snowshoes, yet make for a difficult, snow-flying run. Competitors often include top ranking runners, snowshoe racing enthusiasts, as well as novices and brave winter lovers who have never put on snowshoes before. The trail is maintained and prepared by the Sandwich Recreation Department and the Sandwich Sidehillers. Road crossings are manned by volunteers, and anyone interested in helping out should contact the Sidehillers at [email protected] or check out www.whitemountainmilers.com . Racers can register the morning of the race from 9:30 – 10:30 and racing snowshoe rentals are available at the start. Please come out to race, volunteer to help with the course, or just watch this exciting event.
The last two storms have delivered some snow, although we could certainly use some more. There will be an update on trail conditions after the monthly meeting, which will be held on Thursday, January 3, 2013 at the Clubhouse. Please join us!!
The Sidehillers meeting is being postponed until Thursday, January 3rd at 7:00 p.m. at the Clubhouse because of the storm tomorrow. We do want to meet before the Snowshoe Race, which will be held on Saturday, January 26th. Hopefully, we get a lot of snow and we will all be out shoveling and plowing tomorrow and then can ride snowmobiles to the meeting on January 3rd!
Call or email if you have any questions.
Think Snow!! Julie Dolan
The minutes from the November 29th monthly meeting are posted under the “Minutes” tab. Please try to join us next month for the regular meeting and hopefully we will be talking about all the snow that will be arriving! Also, there is a Facebook page that we will try to keep updating throughout the winter, so check that out at Sandwich Sidehillers Winter Trail Club.
The Ossipee Valley Snowmobile Club will be holding their Swapmeet and Vintage Show on Saturday, November 24 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Canoe King in Tamworth. There is more information on their website or in the SnoTraveler newspaper that just came out.
Timberland Powersports on Route 16 in Ossipee is funding a program for snowmobile club members that for every dollar that a member spends in their store year-round, Timberland will give 5% of that sale directly to the Club. They have all major brand auto parts as well as snowmobiles parts, accessories and clothing. Their website is www.timberlandps.com and their phone number is 301-1308.
Membership letters have gone out. Please try to get your membership in as soon as possible and then you will get your Club card so you can get your sleds registered. Here’s hoping for a snowy winter!!
The next monthly meeting will be held on Thursday, November 29th at 7:00 p.m. at the Clubhouse. See you then! There is no trail work this Saturday. Happy Thanksgiving!
Thanks, Julie Dolan
We will be having 2 full day trail clearing sessions on Saturday, November 3rd and Saturday, November 10th. We will meet at the Clubhouse on Wing Rd. at 8:00 a.m., cookout lunch will be provided on the trail, and we should finish up by 2 or 3:00 p.m. This way we will not have to bug everyone to show up every Saturday morning throughout the Fall and can, hopefully, get a lot of work done to get the trails ready for Winter. Please bring clippers, chainsaws, ATVs or whatever you can use. The more people to help, the easier it is for everyone!! Please try to join us!
The rain may clear up, but the temperatures will be too warm on Saturday for sled dogs. The Sled Dog “Meet & Greet” has been postponed until Sunday, October 21st from 10a.m. – 2p.m. It will be held on the Sandwich Fairgrounds, near the Fire Station. This will be an opportunity for spectators to see some of the mushers and dogs that race in the Sandwich Sled Dog Race in February. The Sandwich Sidehillers will have food available, parking is on the midway section of the Fairgrounds, admission is free. Bring the family and meet some sled dog teams “up close and personal” and watch them run a short, 2 mile course around the Fairgrounds.
If you need more information, check out the home page of www.sandwichsidehillers.com or email Julie at [email protected] or call Marsha at 986-8375. If anyone is willing to volunteer, we could always use extra hands, and if there is anyone who could take some pictures for us, that would also be most appreciated.
Julie Dolan, Secretary, Sandwich Sidehillers
