The Sandwich Sled Dog Race was held Saturday, February 14th on a beautiful, cold and snowy winter day. Dogs, mushers, volunteers and spectators all raved about the wonderfully groomed start area and trails, delicious food and camaraderie and cheered on sled dog teams and drivers in this challenging race that was first started in 1986.
We want to thank the COUNTLESS volunteers that make this Race possible. The list is too long to name individuals but this is a start: The Lego Club for providing the public Mushers’ Supper on Friday night, the Sandwich 4H Dog Club for making the volunteers’ lunches, the many community chefs who provided food for both the Friday night dinner and for sale at the Sandwich Sidehillers food booth at the Race site, all the cooks and wait staff at the booth, Sandwich Sidehillers Winter Trail Club for sponsoring the Race and hours of trail work and set up, Ossipee Valley Snowmobile Club for their beautiful multi-use trails, local businesses that provide financial donations, local homes and inns that provided mushers from far away a place to stay, strong members of the Civil Air Patrol who volunteered at the Race start line to get everyone parked and help get rambunctious, ready-to-run sled dogs to the starting line, the many volunteers who spent hours at road crossings and challenging trail turns making sure the teams are safe and on course, our announcer at the start line, Steve and Tracey Olafsen for providing the professional and official timing, the Radio Club and their hosts that keep track of the mushers every mile along the 45 mile course, the Sandwich PD and Highway Dept. for keeping us all safe, and the hard working crew that plows and packs the start/finish area and the parking lot.
Finally a super, big Thank You to our host families Gary, Diane, Ethan, Alyssa Floyd and Janet Brown.
Sincerely, Sandwich Sled Dog Race Committee
We’ve been waiting for all this snow, huh?!? Please post any conditions or pictures to the Sidehillers Facebook page.
Please be in touch if you can help in any way, large or small, with the Sled Dog Race!! It takes a LOT of volunteers to pull this off, and it’s coming up fast. The food booth is our main fundraiser (other than grooming!) You can contact me at [email protected] or call Marsha at 986-8375 or 284-6206. Thanks in advance!!
The Sandwich Sled Dog Race, hosted by the Sandwich Sidehillers Winter Trail Club, will be held on Saturday, February 14, 2015 on Bennett Street in North Sandwich. The Mushers Supper will be held at the Sandwich Central School on Friday, February 13th starting at 5:30 p.m., followed by the Mushers meeting. On Saturday morning, come and watch the mushers take off for either a 45 or 20 mile course that winds around the beautiful Sandwich and Tamworth winter trails. The Race starts at 9:00 a.m. and racers leave the Starting Line every 2 minutes. Hot food and drink will be available, so grab a hot coffee and a breakfast sandwich, and watch the dogs and their drivers get ready. For more information, please click the “Mushing” tab. We need lots of volunteers; please contact Marsha Colcord at 986-8375 or [email protected] if you can help. We are also in need of local homes that are willing to “Adopt A Musher”, providing a local place to stay for Friday night, February 13th. The mushers are quite self-sufficient, but need room to park their truck and tie out their dogs, and a place to sleep. Please email [email protected] if you can help out with that.
Just a reminder that the monthly Sidehillers meeting will be held tomorrow, Saturday, January 31st at 8:00 a.m. at the Clubhouse.
We really need VOLUNTEERS for the Sled Dog Race coming up on Saturday, February 14th. Please let me know if you can help in any way!!
Think Snow!! Julie
Bryan was out with the big groomer last Friday, and although there wasn’t much to work with, he got the trails as flat as he could. Now hoping that the snow today piles up!
Reminder: Meeting tomorrow morning (Saturday, December 27th) at 8:00 a.m. at the Clubhouse, followed by whatever projects need working on!
Thanks, Julie Dolan
David Bowles is hoping to have some help getting a bridge back to where it belongs. It is on the cut off trail off Bennett St. that is used by the dog sled racers. Dave and Gary Floyd are planning on 10:00 a.m. this Saturday, Dec. 20th. For more info or to let him know you can make it, please call Dave at 323-7353.
The December meeting will be held on Saturday, December 27th at 8:00 a.m., followed by a trail work session (depending on the weather).
We WILL be having a November meeting on Saturday, November 29th at 8:00 a.m. at the Clubhouse. We will have a short business meeting, then anyone who wants to go out for a work detail will be very much appreciated! I know this is the Saturday after Thanksgiving, but there have already been quite a few people who will be around and everyone will need to work off all the extra food! Hope to see a big crowd!
